U.S. Representative Marcy Kaptur, an Ohio Democrat representing the Toledo area, sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries after a two-vehicle crash in Lucas County on August 2, according to her congressional office and a Toledo police crash report.
The collision occurred at approximately 10:45 a.m. on North Detroit Avenue during rainy weather. Investigators say Kaptur, 80, was riding as a passenger in a Ford Bronco when it was struck by a Nissan Altima that crossed the center line.
According to the preliminary crash report prepared by the Toledo Police Department, the Altima was traveling southbound when, for reasons that remain under investigation, the driver lost control of the vehicle. Police said the car skidded across the center line and collided with the northbound Bronco carrying Kaptur.
Following the crash, the driver of the Nissan reportedly fled the scene on foot, leaving the vehicle behind. Authorities have not yet identified the driver, and efforts to locate the individual remain ongoing.
Emergency responders, including police officers, firefighters, and paramedics, arrived at the scene shortly after the collision. Kaptur, who was wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash, was transported to Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo for treatment.
Her office later confirmed that she suffered serious injuries but is expected to recover. The injuries were described as non-life-threatening, and she remains under medical care.
The Ford Bronco was being driven by Kegan Zimmerman, Kaptur’s 26-year-old campaign manager. Zimmerman also sustained injuries in the crash and was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The incident temporarily disrupted traffic on North Detroit Avenue as investigators documented the scene, examined vehicle damage, and gathered evidence to determine the sequence of events that led to the collision.
Police continue to investigate the crash and are working to identify the driver who fled. Detectives are expected to review physical evidence, interview witnesses, and examine any available surveillance or traffic camera footage that may assist in locating the suspect.
Authorities have not yet announced whether alcohol, drugs, speed, or other factors contributed to the crash. The investigation remains active, and officials are urging anyone with information about the unidentified driver or the incident to contact the Toledo Police Department.
Kaptur, who has served in Congress for decades representing northwest Ohio, has received an outpouring of well wishes from colleagues, constituents, and community members following news of the accident. Many have expressed hope for her swift recovery while also wishing Zimmerman a full recovery from his injuries.
As investigators continue their search for the fleeing driver, officials are expected to release additional information as it becomes available. The crash remains under investigation by the Toledo Police Department.
