A tragic two-vehicle collision on North Parham Road in Clover claimed the lives of two drivers and sent six others, including five juveniles, to the hospital Saturday afternoon, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Authorities identified the deceased drivers as 18-year-old Justin Meenaghan and 36-year-old Brooklyn Gilfillan, both of whom died as a result of the devastating head-on collision.
According to investigators, the crash occurred shortly before 3 p.m. on North Parham Road between Highway 55 and Highway 557. Preliminary findings indicate that Meenaghan was driving a 2006 Ford Mustang southbound when, for reasons that remain under investigation, he lost control of the vehicle.
Troopers said the Mustang crossed the center line into the northbound lane, where it collided head-on with a Kia Sorento driven by Gilfillan.
Emergency personnel responded quickly to the scene, but both drivers suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead before they could be transported for medical treatment.
Gilfillan was traveling with six passengers, five of whom were juveniles, at the time of the collision. Authorities confirmed that all six occupants survived the initial impact and were transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation and treatment.
Officials have not released information regarding the severity of their injuries, and their current conditions have not been made public.
The violent crash prompted a large emergency response involving state troopers, local law enforcement, firefighters, emergency medical services, and highway crews. North Parham Road remained closed for several hours as investigators processed the scene and cleanup crews worked to remove the wreckage.
Investigators documented evidence, photographed the scene, and examined the heavily damaged vehicles while traffic was diverted around the affected area. The roadway remained closed until approximately 8 p.m., when officials determined it was safe to reopen.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol has launched a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the collision. At this stage, investigators have not determined why the Mustang crossed into oncoming traffic.
Troopers are examining all possible contributing factors, including vehicle speed, mechanical issues, roadway conditions, driver distraction, impairment, and any other circumstances that may have played a role in the crash. Investigators are also reviewing physical evidence from the scene, including tire marks, debris patterns, and the extent of vehicle damage, to reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the collision.
Authorities have not announced whether additional witness statements or surveillance footage are being reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.
