The official cause of death of beloved John Heard, the actor best known for portraying Peter McCallister in the Home Alone film franchise, was confirmed following an investigation into his sudden passing at the age of 71.
According to the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office, Heard died of a heart attack after he was found unresponsive in a hotel room in Palo Alto, California, on July 21, 2017. His unexpected death shocked fans, fellow actors, and the entertainment industry, bringing an end to a career that spanned more than four decades across film, television, and theater.
While the coroner ultimately ruled that a heart attack was the cause of death, a subsequent toxicology report provided additional details regarding the medications present in Heard’s system at the time of his passing.
According to the report, several prescription medications and substances were detected, including the opioid medications Tramadol, Oxycodone, Oxymorphone, Buprenorphine, Fentanyl, and Hydromorphone. Toxicology findings also identified the presence of Xanax (alprazolam), a medication commonly prescribed to treat anxiety and panic disorders.
Despite the presence of multiple medications, investigators maintained that acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) remained the primary cause of Heard’s death. The toxicology findings were documented as part of the standard postmortem investigation and contributed to a more comprehensive understanding of his medical condition in the days leading up to his death.
